Day 4: Berlin – Leipzig – Colditz – Dresden (B/-/D)

Depart for Leipzig after breakfast. Guided tour of the city, taking in: Augustusplatz with the opera, the “Gewandhaus”, a renowned concert hall and St. Nicholas Church, where Bach composed some of his organ pieces. The market place and the old town hall form the classical city centre. See St. Thomas Church, renowned for its boys choir. It is also the church where Johann Sebastian Bach was laid to rest. Visit the Battle of the Nations Monument, built in remembrance of the Battle of Leipzig 1813, where Napoleon fought against the allied troops. On our way to Dresden we will stop in the small Saxon town of Colditz and visit the Colditz Castle. The castle sits on a steep hill overlooking the Mulde River. A former residence of the kings of Saxony, the castle was used in 1939 as a prisoner-of-war camp, and in 1940 it became a maximum security prison for escape-prone Allied officers. Travel onto Dresden later in the afternoon where you will check-in to your hotel. Dinner and overnight in Dresden.

Day 5: Dresden (B/-/D)

Today you will discover Dresden. The city is nicknamed “Florence of the Elbe” because of its Italianate architectural treasures. Situated on the left bank of the river it has amassed many architectural masterpieces over the centuries. Despite the severe destruction the city endured during the WWII, Dresden has managed to conserve or rebuild its beautiful buildings. Our guided city tour introduces its many highlights as the Baroque Zwinger Palace and the iconic Frauenkirche. Return to your hotel at your leisure in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in Dresden.

Day 6: Dresden – Bamberg – Nuremberg (B/-/D)

We leave Dresden this morning heading to Nuremberg. Our first stop is the historic town of Bamberg which is blessed with one of Europe’s largest intact old town centres. Endowed with a huge number of single monuments from a whole millennium, Bamberg epitomizes the idyllic image of a city whose roots stem from the Middle Ages. This evening, arrive in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg. Dinner and overnight in Nuremberg.

Day 7: Nuremberg (B/-/D)

Dive into the impressive history of the second largest city in Bavaria and enjoy the amenities of Nuremberg - once the unofficial capital of the holy Roman Empire. During your guided city tour see the mighty castle ramparts and stand in the Hauptmarkt main square which is dominated by the impressive Frauenkirche, a great example of the Gothic brick-style architecture of the region. Live history can also be found on the Imperial Castle, Nuremberg's grand landmark. With the historic Memorium Nuremberg Trials, a documentation center in Court Room 600 is accessible to illustrate what happened during the Nuremberg Trials. Spend the rest of the day at leisure to explore the city on your own. Dinner and overnight in Nuremberg.

Day 8: Nuremberg – Rothenburg – Nuremberg (B/-/D)

We will visit the 1,000-year-old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the best preserved town on the Romantic Road where history is ever apparent in its majestic churches and grand patrician houses. Plunge back into the 16th century during your city tour with your local guide as you walk through narrow cobbled streets lined with high-gabled houses to the market square, dominated by its Renaissance town hall. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure. Dinner and overnight in Nuremberg.

Day 9: Nuremberg – Heidelberg (B/-/D)

Morning departure to the Old University Town of Heidelberg that is built alongside the picturesque River Neckar. There are few more delightful places to explore, as you’ll discover on our guided walking tour, which reveals its principal attractions – including the magical stone bridge with its twin white towers – and local secrets. Our guided tour also includes a visit of Heidelberg Palace, one of the world's most impressive palace ruins, synonymous with the Romantic Movement.
